It’s 11:00 PM on a rainy Tuesday in Mississauga. A driver turns into your commercial lot. If your signage doesn’t "pop" under their headlights, it doesn't exist.
In 2026, with driver distraction at an all-time high, choosing the wrong reflective material isn't just a maintenance oversight
it’s a major safety liability. But with three different "grades" of material on the market, how do you know which one is the "best buy" for your specific project?
Before you hit "order," let’s decode the three levels of retro-reflectivity that keep Canadian properties safe.
1. The "Budget Hero": Engineer Grade (Type I)
If you are managing a private parking garage, a residential condo lot, or a quiet warehouse interior, you don't need highway-level brilliance. You need Engineer Grade (EG).
Using traditional glass-bead technology, these signs provide a smooth, professional look that is perfectly visible at low speeds (under 40 km/h). It is the most cost-effective way to stay compliant on private property without overspending.
Best for: No Parking signs, Handicap spots, and wayfinding.

2. The "Goldilocks" Choice: High Intensity Prismatic (Type IV)
When you move from a private lot to a municipal road, the stakes get higher. High Intensity Prismatic (HIP) is the "just right" solution for 90% of Canadian traffic applications.
HIP uses micro-prismatic cells to return three times more light than Engineer Grade. In fact, most Ontario MTO standards now require HIP as the minimum for STOP signs. If your sign needs to be seen through a heavy GTA snowstorm, this is your workhorse.
Best for: City street names, STOP signs, and Speed Limits.

3. The "Life-Saver": Diamond Grade (Type XI)
On high-speed highways like the 401 or in critical pedestrian school zones, "visible" isn't good enough the sign needs to be undeniable.
Diamond Grade (DG) is the elite tier of reflective sheeting. It returns a massive 60% of available light. It’s designed for the highest speeds and the worst weather conditions, ensuring drivers see the message from over 1,500 feet away.
Best for: Highway exits, school zones, and high-speed rural curves.
